Mental Illness Affects One In Five Families In America.
African American Families Are No Exception.
Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning. Unfortunately, as numerous studies have highlighted, lack of education on mental illness and stigma can prevent us from seeking mental health treatment. Without treatment these illnesses can lead to failed relationships, trouble at work or school and even incarceration.
One of the most important things to understand about having a mental illness is that most people can and do recover and continue to lead meaningful lives. At NAMI Howard Countywe help each other rebuild lives, promote a better understanding of mental illness, dispel societal stigma and work towards the process of recovery.
